Trump Administration Ready to Deploy Dozens Government Officers to the Bay Area
The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to send scores of federal agents to the Bay Area region for a large-scale border security initiative, sparking outrage from local politicians.
Details of the Mission
Information of the deployment were still emerging, but it will reportedly involve more than 100 federal agents, according to reports. The officers are expected to begin occupying the military installation in the East Bay, opposite San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether state soldiers would participate.
Official Response
The deployment follows months of warnings by the administration to take action against the Democratic-run city. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the action, labeling it “right out of the autocrat's manual”.
“He dispatches unidentified officers, he deploys Border Patrol, he sends out immigration officials, he instills anxiety and fear in the neighborhood so that he can claim credit for addressing that by sending in the military forces,” he declared. “This mirrors the arsonist fighting the fire.”
City Planning
San Francisco is the latest metropolitan center singled out by Donald Trump’s campaign of mass immigration arrests. The operation is likely to cause a showdown between the administration and local leaders who have vowed to block paramilitary operations in the city.
San Franciscans have been readying for an extended period for Trump to make good on frequent statements to dispatch personnel to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s mayor emphasized that the city was ready.
“During this period, we have been preparing for the chance of a potential government operation in our city,” stated the official, explaining that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s protection of our newcomer populations, and make certain our departments are organized prior to any national intervention.”
Judicial Framework
Despite legal challenges to operations in a several municipalities, including Illinois, Oregon and Los Angeles, Trump has claimed “absolute authority” to send the military forces in cities, citing the federal statute which enables presidents limited power to send forces on domestic land.
Community Response
Newsom, who previously served as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to step in “immediately” to a deployment in the city. “The notion that the national administration can send forces into our cities with no valid reason grounded in reality, no supervision, no responsibility, no consideration of regional control – it’s a direct assault on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.
Local organizations, including civil rights groups established during the previous presidential term, have organized to quickly mobilize a mass rally in the city, as well as peaceful assemblies at public spaces.
Community Impact
In San Francisco’s Mission district, a largely Hispanic population, elected official stated to media last week she and her constituents had been preparing for this situation. “The time that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color can’t freely walk outside without the fear of Trump’s federal agents targeting based on race and apprehending them, the point when parents stop sending kids to school, are too scared to go to the grocery store or doctor,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is essentially a closure the likes of which we have not witnessed since the health crisis.”
Military Condition
Roughly three hundred out of several thousand California military personnel remain federalized under an command from Trump. Roughly 200 of them had been transferred to the Pacific Northwest, where they were waiting in limbo amid a court case over their mission.
This period, Newsom said he had called the state military personnel under his command to operate food banks throughout the government shutdown.
