Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it includes the first new weapon introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also adds a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the development team had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."

If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your companions on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a major use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The unruly pleasure doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.

In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it deserves to be an competitive event right away.

Another major addition in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for fresh air.

The remaining new features are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also unveil something for underwater," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts update is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
